The Black Parent Initiative (BPI) is a program developed to address the continuing educational gap between African American students and their counterparts in Portland schools.


Johnell Bell, co-founder & Secretary

Johnell Bell is currently the Community Liaison for Multnomah County Chair Ted Wheeler and has most recently served in the Office of Portland’s Mayor Tom Potter, where he worked on Community Engagement and Outreach Policies. Johnell passion for community engagement led him to serve a year on the Portland School Board as students’ representative. A former K-12 fellow at the Center for Academic Excellence at Portland State University, Johnell continues to work for the betterment of all children in the public school system. Johnell is the youngest of five children, all of whom reside in the Portland metro area.
